Vestfirðir

Vestfirðir

Northwest of Reykjavik, beyond Snæfellsjökull and the entrance to the center of the Earth, and across the bay from Stykkishólmur lays Iceland's most mysterious and ancient region. Vestfirðir, or the West Fjords, stick out like a glove in the far northwest of the country. The terraced basalt cliffs reveal ageless remains of lava flows that have been hacked apart by glaciers and streams to create stunning scenery.

These fjords are home to countless elves, dwarves, and trolls, evidences of which are all around if you look for it. Homesteads of ancient viking families remain, some still inhabited, with marginally tillable farms, sheep, and abundant fish. Viking epics began and ended in these fjords.
